There are plenty of things in Taos for tourists and locals alike including:

– The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge

The Rio Grande Bridge is a bridge that spans over the famous river gorge. It’s also known as “the highest U.S. suspension bridge above any major river.”  Standing on the edge of this massive structure and looking down at the Rio Grande is a truly breathtaking experience.

– The Taos New Mexico Pueblo Village

The Taos Pueblo native people and their dwellings are especially unique. The pueblos were built in the northern part of New Mexico, high up on a mountain that is considered sacred by native tribes.  The Navajo and Apache Indians claimed this land for themselves. They believed it was home to different spirits such as rain gods, sun gods, and fertility gods. The ancient Pueblo people believed that to protect themselves from these different spirits they had to build homes with strong beams of wood so the evil spirits couldn’t get in. To this day many Native Americans have a special place for their dead relatives because it is also considered sacred by them as well since life started here on earth.

The Pueblo is a living Native American community that has been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years! The pueblo features a number of different guided tours where you can learn all about the history and culture of these interesting people.

– Taos Ski Valley Mountain Resort

– The Millicent Rogers Museum

The museum is located in the historic Harvey House. The building was constructed by Santa Fe Railway during 1890–91 to be one of a chain of “Harvey Houses” along the railroad route.  It is also known as Taos Railroad Depot or TA&SF Freight Depot due to its proximity to the Taos train station of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

When it opened in 1892, this Harvey House was considered one of the finest hotels between Chicago and Los Angeles. It housed 56 guest rooms on two floors surrounding an interior court with palm trees growing from within (the palms were planted when about eight feet tall and were eventually destroyed in the 1950s by a windstorm).

Exhibits

What makes this place stand out from other museums is that its collections are not confined to American Indian art only, but instead it displays fine art of all kinds. The collection includes paintings, sculpture, prints and drawings from Taos artists such as Nicolai Fechin, Bert Geer Phillips, Edward Borein, Joseph Henry Sharp and Anna Hills.

In addition to the art collection, there are also exhibits of Southwestern textiles from pre-historic times through present day weaving. In addition, to an outstanding selection of Navajo weavings. The museum has a library with over 5000 volumes related to Taos history and culture as well as a gift shop.
